19285Shippensburg University's Steve Spence was named the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year on Thursday morning after voting was conducted by his peers throughout the league.

The Raiders won both conference championships and both regional championships in 2016. It is just the second time in school history that Shippensburg won both the men's and women's conference championships in the same season, matching the feat achieved back in 2010.

It is also just the second time in school history that Shippensburg won both the men's and women's regional championships in the same season, matching the feat achieved back in 2009.

Spence, in his 19th season, had eight men achieve All-PSAC honors at the conference championships and was the only school to put three runners among the Top 7 finishers. It is the second conference championship in history for the SU men's team and first since 2010.

Shippensburg had six women achieve All-PSAC honors at the conference championships and was the only school to put all five of its scoring runners among the Top 20 finishers. It is the eighth conference championship in history for the SU women's team and first since 2012.

One month ago, Spence was named the 2016 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Region Women's Cross Country Head Coach of the Year after instructing the SU women to their first regional team championship since 2012 (eighth overall) and its best overall regional point total (57 points) since 2011. SU again put all of its scorers among the Top 20 finishers at the regional championships as it did at the conference championships.

The SU men claimed regional glory for the second consecutive year and the third time overall, putting all of its scorers within the Top 17 finishers and a sixth within the Top 18 finishers.

At the NCAA Championships, the SU men finished 16th and the SU women finished 24th. Kieran Sutton (25th place) and Casey Norton (28th place) earned All-America honors and were the top finishers by gender from a PSAC school.

Overall, Thursday's honors mark the sixth career PSAC Women's Coach of the Year award for Spence (2008-12) and his fifth career PSAC Men's Coach of the Year award (2000, 2009-10, 2015).
