The Shippensburg University men's cross country team produced its best result at the NCAA Division II National Championships in eight years on Saturday as it delivered a 17th-place finish in competition at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Shippensburg, which entered the meet ranked No. 27 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll, exceeded its national ranking by 10 spots. After a patient start, the Raiders surged during the second half of the race before enduring a tough finish over the final 1,000 meters.
Garrett Quinan delivered his top performance to date at the national championships and finished just four spots shy of All-America honors. Quinan ran hard in the second half of the race, gaining 29 spots in the standings from the 5K to 8K mark, and crossed the line 44th overall with a time of 30:46.8.
Tommy Crum Jr. improved his place-finish by 81 spots Saturday in his second national championship race, finishing 52nd in 30:56.3.
Saturday marked the first time that SU had two runners finish among the Top 60 since its 10th-place team finish in 2017. That year, Alex Balla earned All-America honors with a 37th-place finish and Calvin Conrad-Kline was 59th.
Ryan Wolfe made his third nationals appearance his best yet, crossing the finish line 125th with a time of 32 minutes flat.
Ben Devine was just two seconds behind, completing his nationals debut in 128th place.
Ramon Urena finished 209th as the final Raider scorer; his time was 32:52.2. It is an improvement of five places for Urena from last season.
Brennan Wellock (221st) and
Ben Hummel (231st) were the remaining Raider runners.
SU produced the top performance of the three teams representing the Atlantic Region. Charleston (W. Va.) finished 24th (87-103-133-140-204) while Davis & Elkins finished 30th (115-150-179-188-202).
Shippensburg ran at the NCAA Division II National Championships for the third straight year and 24th time overall.
