SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Robert Furfaro scored in the 72nd minute Wednesday to propel the Shippensburg University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over California (Pa.) on an overcast afternoon at David See Field.
Shippensburg (3-2-1, 1-0 PSAC) won its conference opener after junior
Derek Adams won a ball at the midfield and chipped it high over a defender to Furfaro. About 30 yards out, Furfaro collected the ball and dribbled away from a defender on his heels to rip a volley from 15 yards out into the left side of the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Evan Raimist was integral to the team's victory Wednesday, standing tall by matching his career high with eight saves. Raimist made a point-blank, diving save on Cal's Tyler Wollum with 4:23 to play and also thwarted a close-range shot by Nathan Delgado in the 75th minute.
California (1-4-1, 0-2) out-shot the Raiders 20-12, including 12-5 in the second half. It nearly opened the scoring in the 53rd minute as Djordje Babic launched a 20-yard shot off the crossbar.
Shippensburg travels to face Slippery Rock at 1 p.m. Saturday.
