The Shippensburg University women's swimming team won seven events Friday in a dual meet against fellow Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent Edinboro to claim its second victory in as many days, defeating the Fighting Scots 109-94 from McComb Fieldhouse.
"I really couldn't be happier with how tough our women came out and performed this weekend," head coach
Tim Verge said. "Today's meet against a really good Edinboro team required some mental fortitude, and they really stepped up to the challenge."
Shippensburg was back in the pool Friday morning just 16 hours after completing a Thursday night dual meet at Gannon. The Raiders responded with a victory in the opening 200-yard medley relay and six individual event wins.
"We had to push through some things, and swim sometimes feeling uncomfortable, but we talked about racing hard, challenging ourselves mentally, and I thought we did a terrific job with that," Verge said.
After tying for the victory in the 200-yard medley relay on Thursday night, the quarter of junior
Carly Alvarado, sophomore
Gabriella Johnson, senior
Rhyan Rodriguez and senior
Jeanette Welch swam faster on Friday with a victory by more than two full seconds – setting the tone with a time of 1:52.18.
Alvarado and freshman
Madeleine Verby each won two events on the day. Verby paced the Raiders in the 500-yard freestyle (5:35.79) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:20.79), while Alvarado touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.06 after a collegiate best in the event last evening, and later produced an excellent effort in the 200-yard backstroke of 2:12.41.
Junior
Stephanie O'Toole aced the 200-yard IM in 2:10.13, while senior
Erin Fife completed the 200-yard butterfly in 2:18.07 for Raider victories.
Additional conference cuts included sophomore Grace Tothero finishing second in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:34.16 while Johnson was third in 2:37.01. Welch completed the 100-yard freestyle in 55.96 seconds.
The victory completes Shippensburg's dual-meet record at 7-2 -- marking its most dual-meet victories in a season in more than 12 years.
"To finish 7-2 in dual meets is very exciting for the group," Verge said. "If we can stay healthy, we should have a successful conference championship. I am very proud of this group of women."
Shippensburg returns to action Saturday, January 27 at Navy.
