SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's tennis team came up just short in its 2017 season finale on Saturday, dropping a hard-fought marathon match with Millersville, 6-3, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division play from the Robb Sports Complex Tennis Courts.
Shippensburg (4-9, 2-3 PSAC) was vying for a PSAC Tournament berth, but the loss dropped the Raiders into a three-way tie for the division's No. 3 seed with East Stroudsburg (4-8, 2-3) and Millersville (4-13, 2-3). East Stroudsburg claimed the tiebreaker by virtue of holding the most courts won (10) in head-to-head play between the three tied teams.
Emilie Luttman, SU's lone senior, was honored before Saturday's contest. Luttman battled to the end in both of her final matches – teaming with sophomore
Kaylin Gallagher for a 9-8 setback (7-5 in tiebreaker) at No. 2 doubles before dropping a 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7) decision at No. 3 singles.
Luttman finishes her SU career with 20 singles and 16 doubles victories, completing a run as one of the most successful Raiders to take the court over the last 10 years.
Gallagher also had a marathon singles match, coming up just short in dropping a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles. The match score was 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) in favor of Millersville's Kelley Hershey.
SU trailed 2-1 after doubles, as the freshmen duo of
Madeline Carson and
Daisy Rundio posted an 8-6 victory in the No. 3 flight. Carson and Rundio complete their debut seasons with a 5-2 record as a No. 3 doubles pairing – including a 3-2 record in conference matches.
Both women won singles matches as well – Carson claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles while Rundio won a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 6 singles.
Freshman
Catherine Miller won seven games in her No. 1 singles match, falling 6-3, 6-4 in a hard-fought competition with Millersville's Katina Jones.
