The Shippensburg University women's swimming team posted victories over all three of its opponents on Friday night in a successful quad meet held at California University of Pennsylvania, as the Raiders achieved wins over Millersville (136-108), Fairmont State (160.5-77.5) and the host Vulcans (123-120).
Shippensburg won four events, including three victories for junior
Stephanie O'Toole. In addition to important wins in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.65) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.00), O'Toole broke the prestigious pool record in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.94.
Junior
Carly Alvarado won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:23.56 and placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.67) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.26).
"I was really looking forward to this challenge for our women," head coach
Tim Verge said. "We have several of our swimmers out at the moment, so we had to change things up and challenge them and get out and race. After a tough week of work, and a long bus ride, they couldn't have responded any better."
A total of nine Raider performances satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard. Senior
Erin Fife finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.49) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.96). Sophomore
Gracee Tothero completed the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.63, and senior
Jeanette Welch tied for second in the 100-yard freestyle after touching the wall in 55.81 seconds.
"It was another exciting accomplishment for Steph, breaking the pool record," Verge said. "She had a great meet. But we needed every point in every competition to come out on top tonight, especially against Cal. It'll be exciting to see where we're at in a couple weeks at George Mason."
The meet concluded with Fife, Welch, freshman
Mari Reott and senior
Nollaig Noll completing the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:47.08.
"We had some people in some different events and some people that we asked to go back to back in certain events," Verge said. "It was really exciting to watch them be tough and race."
Shippensburg returns to action at 5 p.m. Friday when it concludes its regular-season home dual meet schedule, hosting Clarion from Donald N. Miller Pool. Before the meet, the Raiders will honor their seniors:
MacKenna Angert, Fife, Noll,
Rhyan Rodriguez,
Sarah Strause and Welch.
