Men’s Swimming Claims Home Dual Meet Over Fairmont State, 126-76

SU wins 7-of-11 events; Beyer wins two distance freestyle events

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's swimming team were victorious in several close races on Friday night with Fairmont State and won 7-of-11 events to claim a dual meet over the Fighting Falcons, 126-76, from Donald N. Miller Pool.

Shippensburg set the tempo early on with a victory in the opening event, the 400-yard medley relay. Freshman Nick Bloom, freshman Christian Gamboa, senior Shaun Smith and freshman Adam Fox teamed up for a time of 3:39.14, edging Fairmont by .57 seconds.

Freshman Jeff Beyer won both of his distance freestyle events, claiming the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:22.63 and later the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.89. Both of Beyer's efforts satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standards. SU had nine individual PSAC cuts on the night.

In one of the closest races of the night, Fox emerged victorious in the 100-yard freestyle on a PSAC cut of 49.09 seconds – posting a narrow win by just .37 seconds. Gamboa won the 200-yard breaststroke near the end of the meet in a PSAC cut of 2:15.37, and also posted a second-place time in the 200-yard freestyle on a PSAC cut of 1:50.05.

Junior Kristian Voulopos was busy once again – winning the 200-yard backstroke in 1:59.30 and placing second in both the 50-yard freestyle (22.25 seconds). Both times were PSAC cuts. Sophomore Evan Smith also had a PSAC cut in the 50-yard freestyle, swimming 22.63 seconds, while Bloom had a PSAC cut in the 200-yard backstroke of 2:04.58.

The meet concluded with the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Beyer, Voulopos, Evan Smith and Shaun Smith winning the event in 1:28.50.

Shippensburg will travel to Clarion at 5 p.m. Friday for a dual meet with the Golden Eagles.
