ALLENDALE, Mich. – Senior
Bri Fells became the first women's 400-meter All-American in school history on Saturday to cap off three days of competition for the Shippensburg University women's outdoor track & field team at the 2015 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University.
Competing in her first NCAA national championships, Fells qualified eighth in Thursday's prelims and ran eighth again on Saturday – working through an uncharacteristically warm and sunny day for western Michigan standards.
She closed her collegiate career with a lifetime PR in her signature event, running 55.08 seconds to claim Shippensburg's only team point of the competition. Fells concludes a storied career as an 18-time PSAC place-winner (11 individual, 7 relay) and 7-time PSAC champion whose final 400 meters in a Raider uniform proved to be her fastest.
SU finished as one of six schools from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) to score at this year's NCAA Championships, joining Bloomsburg, Seton Hill, Slippery Rock, East Stroudsburg and Millersville.
Two field athletes represented the Raiders on Saturday. Freshman
Crystal Hartman finished 14th in the javelin, posting a top mark of 141 feet, 7 inches (43.15 meters) on her second attempt. Hartman had a mark of 132 feet, 6 inches (40.38 meters) on her first throw and fouled her third attempt. She finishes her rookie year with a fifth-place turn at the PSAC Championships and a Top 15 national performance.
Sophomore
Sarah Hunt, who competed in the long jump on Thursday, doubled up with a turn in the triple jump on Saturday. Hunt finished 16th, with her best mark of 38 feet, 7 inches (11.76 meters) coming on her second attempt. Hunt fouled her first jump and notched a mark of 38 feet, 2 ¼ inches (11.64 meters) on her third attempt.
Hunt's impressive second collegiate season included a PSAC title in the triple jump and a second-place turn in the long jump while competing at the national championships in both events. She will enter her third season with the Raiders armed with the school record in the long jump.
Overall, Fells' All-America finish is the first in two years for Shippensburg. SU has had an individual All-American in six of the last seven years.
