Courtney Kennedy scored a season-high five goals Wednesday and senior
Amanda Krok matched a season-high with five points, including a career-high four assists, as the Shippensburg University lacrosse team notched a 13-10 victory over East Stroudsburg on "Stick it to Cancer" Day at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (7-5, 4-3 PSAC East) surpassed its conference win total of last season by scoring four goals in the final 7:05 of the first half to build an 8-5 halftime lead that it would not relinquish. The Raiders did not trail in the contest and allowed just two goals in the final 16 minutes – both of which were scored by ESU (6-5, 1-5 PSAC) in the final 64 seconds.
Kennedy recorded her third career five-goal game, scoring four times in the first half. She added three groundballs and committed just one turnover.
Krok, meanwhile, nabbed game highs with five draw controls and three caused turnovers in addition to a free-position goal, two groundballs and four assists – including helpers on two of SU's last three goals.
The Raiders caused 12 turnovers and won the turnover margin by eight, 23-15, over the Warriors. Senior
Liz French had another strong effort from her defensive position, recording two caused turnovers and scooping up three groundballs.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ally Frymoyer had a strong effort in Wednesday's game, contributing six saves to the cause and picking up a pair of groundballs.
SU received goals from six different players in the game, including the fifth hat trick of the season by senior
Bennett Widlake. Widlake added three groundballs, two draw controls and a caused turnover in which she intercepted a pass, ran the length of the field, and passed the ball to sophomore
Tanisha Joseph, who, after being fouled, handed the ball off to Kennedy for her third goal of the day.
Widlake is now one of 12 players in SU history with more than 100 career goals. Her 103 career tallies ranks her 10th in school history.
Senior
Kayla Dalzell scored twice and filled out her stat line with a draw control, caused turnover and groundball. Freshman
Annemarie Cericola added a goal, draw control, caused turnover and two groundballs.
Off the bench,
Max Barkley scored her second goal of the season – marking tallies in back-to-back games for the SU freshman. Freshman
Amanda Frank assisted on Barkley's goal and had two caused turnovers. Joseph's assist was the first of her career and her fourth career point.
SU dedicated the day to a special individual near and dear to the team's heart. The team's "Stick it to Cancer" effort had extra meaning for junior
Garrie Grenfell, whose mother, Betsy Lee Grenfell, passed away last summer from cancer. SU lacrosse played Wednesday's game in honor of Betsy Lee, recognizing her before the game with a moment of silence.
The team sold T-shirts at the game and also collected donations for cancer research, with half the proceeds given to the breast cancer organization Susan G. Komen and the other half given to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC).
SU will next embark upon a four-game road trip, next playing Tuesday at No. 14 West Chester.
