KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Shippensburg University softball team snapped a three-game losing streak on Sunday with an impressive 2-0 victory against Ferris State before dropping a 3-1 decision to Indianapolis in the Rebel Spring Games at the Osceola County Softball Complex.

The Lady Raiders finished a stretch of five games in 27 hours with a 1-4 record.

Shippensburg (6-6) locked in a scoreless battle through five innings with Ferris State who was preseason ranked No. 25 in the NFCA Division II Coaches' Poll and who is currently receiving votes.

The two teams combined to advance just three runners to third base through the first five-and-a-half innings before Shippensburg was able to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the victory.

With two outs and two runners in scoring position, junior Rachelle Wedell delicately snuck a single up the middle to score freshman pinch-runner Maggie Sander and freshman Courtney Steele that gave Shippensburg a 2-0 lead.

Then, in the top of the seventh, senior Dani Shields stranded one runner on base and struck out back-to-back Bulldogs to end the game. Shields fashioned a gem, allowing just three singles while pitching her first shutout of the season to improve her record to 3-1.

Just 20 minutes after the victory, Shippensburg took on Indianapolis for the second time this season. The Lady Raiders beat the Greyhounds 6-3 back on March 1 at the Catawba College Invitational, but Indianapolis rebounded for a two-run victory in a tightly-contest game.

Jessica Breeden led off the Greyhound half of the first the exact same way as in Catawba, smacking a home run over the fence to give Indianapolis a 1-0 lead.

Shippensburg countered with an RBI-single from freshman Moira Johnsen in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1, but Breeden responded with an RBI-single to give the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead after two.

Lindsey Gustine drove home an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth that propelled Indianapolis to win its fifth-straight victory after the team started the season 2-10.

Freshman Dana Ward went the distance for Shippensburg and struck out four while scattering eight hits over six innings. Her counterpart, Amanda Wendlinger, earned the victory for Indianapolis, allowing five hits and striking out four over seven innings.

Senior Sarah Stengl had the most consistent bat for the Lady Raiders as she went 3-for-4 between the two games. She came close to earning an RBI against the Greyhounds, driving a single through the middle with Indianapolis leading 2-1 in the sixth, but Sander was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Junior Lori Knopf finished the second game 1-for-2 with a walk and a run while Breeden finished 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Greyhounds.

Shippensburg will have the day off on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday with two games against Upper Iowa at 9:00 a.m., and a 1:00 p.m. contest versus Minnesota State-Mankato.
