RECAP: Volleyball posts four-set win over Frostburg State

Raiders rally after dropping the first set to take three close frames

UPDATE: Emily Gardner was named to the All-Tournament Team on Saturday night.

The Shippensburg University volleyball team concluded its three-day weekend at Cal U. with a four-set win over Frostburg State by scores of 16-25, 28-26, 28-26 and 25-23 at the Convocation Center.
 
Shippensburg (3-5) overcame a sluggish hitting performance by recording 10 blocks and holding the Bobcats to a .099 hitting percentage. Two Raiders slammed double-digit kills, led by freshman Emily Gardner (Avon, Ohio/Avon) crunching a career-high 18 kills in a double-double with 12 digs. She hit .241.
 
Junior Oyinda Agbale had 13 kills and led the team with six block assists, while junior Rachel Verhoef had nine kills, three solo blocks, and a block assist. Freshman Hope Leavy-Gaskins contributed a career-high seven kills.
 
Redshirt-sophomore Alex Leitner delivered a season-best 29 digs and served two of SU's five aces. Four Raiders had double-digit digs, including a season-high 14 digs for senior Syera McCormick.
 
Freshman setter Lily Letchworth had another solid performance with 38 assists, 13 digs and four kills. Junior Kaitlyn Townsend had four kills and two block assists.
 
Shippensburg returns to action next weekend with its first home matches of the season. The Raiders host Bentley at 7 p.m. Friday inside Heiges Field House.
