SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University field hockey junior
Megan Hart was named Saturday afternoon as the recipient of the 2018 Jane Goss Perseverance Award in a halftime ceremony at the home women's basketball game from Heiges Field House.
Â
Hart was diagnosed this past fall with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood. She had already started field hockey activities and the early portion of the academic semester when her health began to decline.
Â
The cancer attacked Hart's immune system and caused her to undergo in-patient chemotherapy treatments at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital. She remains there today, but remains very busy on her road to recovery with physical therapy.
Â
Hart completes physical exercises, practices her field hockey skills and has been doing yoga. Her spirits are high, and her energy is positive. Hart has been an inspiration to not only her field hockey teammates, but to fellow SU students and to countless members of the community.
Â
Megan's parents, Bryan and Michelle Hart, were on hand Saturday to accept the award on her behalf.
Â
The Jane Goss Perseverance Award is given annually in recognition of an individual or individuals who exemplify dedication and continued support of Shippensburg University and the community and who have persevered and triumphed through life's difficulties.
