RECAP: Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match on the Road at Lock Haven

SU cannot complete rally against Bald Eagles

The Shippensburg University volleyball team rallied from a pair of one-set deficits on Friday night but could not get past host Lock Haven in the fifth set, dropping a 3-2 decision to the host Bald Eagles in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division matchup from Thomas Fieldhouse.

Shippensburg (23-6, 13-4 PSAC) falls into a tie for second place in the overall PSAC standings with Seton Hill (20-8, 13-4). The first tiebreaker used to determine the seeding for the PSAC Tournament is the FIVB points system* as applied to PSAC matches. Through this system, the Raiders hold a narrow 41-40 lead over the Griffins.

Therefore, SU will need to win in three or four sets on Saturday at Bloomsburg to maintain the No. 2 seed in the upcoming PSAC Tournament.

Lock Haven (10-16, 5-12) maintained its status as a difficult road destination for the Raiders. SU has played to five sets in three of its last four matches at Thomas Fieldhouse, and the two teams went to four sets in the other meeting. Friday's match marks the first loss for the Raiders at LHU since the 2014 season.

Junior Samantha Webber matched a season-high with 18 kills and was credited with three blocks while hitting .306. Sophomore Alana Pergine was credited with a career-high 12 kills, swinging .235 from the floor.

Senior Morgan DeFloria had 12 kills and was credited with a career-high 37 digs. Junior Gabriella Johnson added 11 kills, 22 digs and three blocks.

Sophomore setter Emily Hangen had 51 assists, four kills, two solo blocks, three aces and was credited with a career-high 28 digs.

Junior libero Megan Forstburg was credited with 24 digs, putting her over the 1,400 mark for her career. Forstburg now has 527 digs this season, which ranks 10th in SU single-season history.

Junior Kendall Johnson notched 10 kills, while redshirt-senior Courtney Malott added 14 digs.

* The FIVB points system awards three points for a victory in three or four sets, two points for a victory in five sets, and one point for a loss in five sets. (SU has 13 wins in three or four sets and two losses in five sets, while SHU has 12 wins in three or four sets, one win in five sets, and two losses in five sets).

UP NEXT: Saturday, 1 p.m. at Bloomsburg.
