SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader with the No. 1-ranked Millersville Marauders on Friday, rallying from a one-run deficit in the 10th inning to walk off in Game 2 on a day where pitching was dominant at Fairchild Field. SU won Game 2, 2-1, after falling 3-0 in the opener.
Â
Shippensburg (21-23, 10-12 PSAC East) and Millersville (37-4, 19-3) were scoreless through nine innings in Game 2 before the Marauders got on the board in the 10th with a one-out sacrifice fly. The Raiders first tied the game in the bottom half on a one-out RBI-single by freshman
Cash Gladfelter.
Â
The hit was setup by freshman catcher
Jack Goertzen, who drew a walk off Millersville closer Mike Mock and then sophomore pinch runner
Levi Varner moved to second on a wild pitch. Varner easily scored on Gladfelter's hit.
Â
Senior shortstop
Mike Marcinko worked the count full in the next at-bat and then sent an opposite-field knock that went down into the right-field corner. Millersville's right fielder fell down as he was chasing toward the ball, allowing Gladfelter to score uncontested from first base.
Â
The Raiders had each of their starters throw seven innings on the day, marking the first time SU has had both starters in a conference doubleheader throw at least seven innings since last year's home twinbill versus Mansfield. Junior
Mark Curtis threw extremely well in Game 1, yielding just one run and five hits through the first six innings before allowing two more runs to cross in the seventh.
Â
Sophomore
Andy Crum had a breakthrough performance in Game 2, throwing a career-high seven shutout innings and allowing just four hits and three walks while striking out four.
Â
Crum entered the day with a 10.55 career ERA through 29 collegiate innings and facing a group of Marauders that boasted Division II's third-best team batting average (.356). He used excellent location and masterful execution Friday to allow just two runners to reach third base, retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced and not giving up a hit after a leadoff-single in the fourth.
Â
Senior
Thomas Swartz improved to 3-0 on the year with the Game 2 relief win, throwing three innings after Crum's departure and allowing the lone MU run in the 10th. Swartz walked two, struck out two and allowed three hits. In his last five outings, Swartz has allowed just three earned runs in 10.2 innings with 10 strikeouts.
Â
Marcinko's double was SU's only extra-base hit of the doubleheader, as Millersville starters Brandon Miller and Cordell Shannon combined to throw 16 shutout innings. The combined pitching lines of the four starting pitchers on Friday? Thirty innings, three earned runs (0.90 ERA), eight walks and 14 strikeouts.
Â
Of SU's 11 hits on the day, sophomore
Grant Hoover was 4-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader. Sophomore
Nick Spangler had a single and a walk in Game 2.
Â
Shippensburg's defense was sterling on Friday, turning two double plays in each game. Marcinko not only had a hand in all four twin killings but he was exceptional all day with the glove, with his biggest highlight being a diving catch on a Ted Williams liner in the seventh inning of Game 2 to save a run.
Â
Friday's doubleheader marked the second straight year that Shippensburg has snapped a long winning streak for the Marauders. Millersville had a 13-game streak snapped with a Game 2 home victory last year, and today's Game 2 win ended a 14-game win streak for the visitors.
With Kutztown and Bloomsburg having moved their weekend series to Saturday-Sunday, the Raiders now sit two games ahead of the fifth-place Golden Bears for the final PSAC Eastern Division playoff spot with 6-8 conference games still remaining.
Â
Shippensburg heads to Millersville on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the No. 1-ranked Marauders at Cooper Park.Â
