MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team received solid starting pitching again Saturday, but could not translate that into a victory, dropping a pair of games to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division rival Millersville, 2-0 and 16-2, at Cooper Park.
Â
Shippensburg's (21-25, 10-14 PSAC East) starting pitchers, senior
Marcus Shippey and senior
Kyle McClintock, combined to allow just two earned runs in 7.2 innings of work Saturday afternoon while both enduring tough luck.
Â
Shippey allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking none and striking out three in four innings. However, to start the fifth inning, Shippey was hit with a line drive on the foot and had to leave the game. Sophomore
Grant Hoover was solid in relief, throwing two scoreless innings after coming in from right field to finish Game 1.
Â
The Raiders recorded five hits, but none after the fifth inning of Game 1 as Millersville's Jim McDade threw a complete game shutout.
Â
In Game 2, McClintock allowed just one hit while shutting out the Marauders through the first three innings. However, McClintock allowed a single, a wild pitch and an RBI single consecutively to start the fourth inning, affording Millersville a 1-0 lead.
Â
It appeared that McClintock would work his way out of the jam in the fourth allowing just that one run, but with two outs a fly ball was dropped in the SU outfield, allowing two runs to score. The next batter, Millersville's Jeremy Musser, hit a three-run home run to right field to put the Marauders up 6-0.
Â
The Raiders' two runs in Game 2 came on the first career home run by freshman
Tommy Baggett – a two-run shot to left-center field that scored junior
Ryan McMillen.
Â
Hoover and Baggett were the lone SU hitters to record a hit in each game. Senior
Mike Marcinko had a pair of hits in Game 1 and his 27th stolen base of the season.
Â
The Raiders, which handed Millersville (39-4, 21-3 PSAC East) just its fourth loss of the season on Friday, lost three out of four games this weekend, but remain in sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot in the PSAC East.
The two teams in close pursuit of SU, Bloomsburg and Kutztown, still have a doubleheader to play Sunday.
Â
The Raiders will travel to Bloomsburg Friday for a PSAC East doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. before hosting the Huskies for two games next Saturday in the final games of the regular season.
