The Shippensburg University baseball team finished with a weekend split as it dropped a pair of games to Mansfield Saturday, 13-2 and 6-2, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at Shaute Field.
Â
Shippensburg (14-17, 5-7 PSAC East) won both games Friday against Mansfield before the Mounties bounced back to split the four-game series with two wins Saturday.
Â
Sophomore
Grant Hoover continued his outstanding weekend by going 5-for-6 with a double in the doubleheader Saturday. Hoover finished with 10 hits in four games this weekend.
Â
Following a three-run second inning by Mansfield in Game 1, SU responded with two runs in the top of the third when senior
Austin Allison singled home senior
Mike Marcinko and Hoover.
Â
However, Mansfield (13-15, 3-9) pulled away quickly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third and seven runs in the fourth inning to round out the scoring.
Â
In Game 2, Hoover doubled down the right field line to score Marcinko in the third inning before freshman
Tommy Baggett hit an RBI single in the fourth to afford SU a 2-1 lead. MU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly, and the score remained 2-2 entering the sixth inning.
Â
SU's Game 2 starter, sophomore
Andy Crum, pitched 5.1 innings in which he struck out five Mansfield batters. He left with the game tied and a man on second base, but the Mounties went on to score four runs in the sixth on two RBI doubles and a two-run home run.
Â
Senior
Kyle McClintock pitched in both games Saturday, throwing a scoreless inning in the first game before getting the final two outs in the sixth inning of Game 2. Senior
Seth LeFever threw 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts in Game 1.
Â
Marcinko had a hit in each game, including a double, and two runs scored. Marcinko and Allison both finished with six hits on the weekend.
