SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team used a shutout Friday to win Game 1, 1-0, before falling in Game 2, 12-2, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader with Lock Haven at a blustery Fairchild Field.
Â
Shippensburg (10-14, 2-4 PSAC) received an outstanding pitching performance in Game 1 from junior
Mark Curtis, who pitched a seven-inning complete game shutout in which he scattered six hits. Curtis struck out five, including the final batter of the game with the game-tying run on second base.
The shutout is the first of Curtis' career, and the first by an SU pitcher since April 7 of last season when
Kyle McClintock shutout UPJ in seven innings.
Â
The first game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when senior
Austin Allison led off the frame with a bunt single and advanced to second on an errant throw. Sophomore
Dalton Hoiles effectively moved Allison to third by punching a groundout to the second base after falling behind in the count.
Â
Junior
Ryan McMillen followed with a sacrifice fly to center field as Allison used a head first slide to sneak his hand in just before the tag for the lone run of the contest.
Â
Game 2 started much quicker as Lock Haven (12-7, 4-2) scored three in the top of the first inning, while SU responded with two in the bottom half of the first on an RBI double by Hoiles, who then scored on a hotshot by McMillen that was mishandled at third base.
Â
Both teams went scoreless in the second and third inning, but Lock Haven scored two runs in the fourth before creating separation with a six-run fifth. Meanwhile, Bald Eagles' starter Mike Anthony was able to settle in, allowing just one earned run in 5.2 innings before leaving with an injury.
Â
SU's game two starter, senior
Marcus Shippey, struck out three and allowed four earned runs in 3.2 innings.
Â
Allison was the lone Raider with a multi-hit game on the afternoon as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored in Game 1. Sophomore
Nick Spangler reached three times in the two games, with a single and two walks.
Â
Freshman
Cash Gladfelter had a hit in each game, including a long double to straightaway center field in Game 2.
Â
SU and Lock Haven will complete their four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in Lock Haven.
