The Shippensburg University baseball team salvaged a weekend split with Lock Haven on Saturday by winning the second game of a road Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader, 3-1, after the home-standing Bald Eagles won the opener by the same score.
Â
Shippensburg (11-15, 3-5 PSAC East) got a complete game three-hitter in Game 2 from sophomore
Gabe Mosser, who walked just one and struck out five in an 87-pitch effort. Mosser was perfect through the first eight batters of the game before LHU's No. 9 hitter rocked a long fly ball to right field that ended up being scored as a home run. He yielded just three base-runners the rest of the way.
Â
It was the fourth complete game of Mosser's young career; his longest outing of the season prior to Saturday was 3.2 innings.
Â
Senior
Mike Marcinko went 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI-single, stolen base and a run. Sophomore
Grant Hoover was 2-for-4 with an RBI-single, while freshman
Tommy Baggett opened the scoring with an RBI-single in the first.
Â
Sophomore
Dalton Hoiles had two hits, while freshman
Jack Goertzen was 2-for-2 with a walk.
Â
SU turned two exquisite double plays in the game in support of Mosser. In the fourth, freshman
Cash Gladfelter scooped a grounder in which he threw to Marcinko at second base for the first out, and the pivot went back to Mosser covering first base to turn the twin killing.
Â
One inning later, junior
Ryan McMillen back-handed a hard-hit ball in the hole at third base and fired to second base, where sophomore
Nick Spangler made an excellent turn and threw to Gladfelter for the double play.
Â
In Game 1, senior
Rich Michaud started and allowed three runs on five hits in three-plus innings of work. All three runs came with two outs in the third inning. Lock Haven got a walk and a single, and then another walk on a very close 3-2 pitch that loaded the bases. Matt Lahn then cleared the bases with a double for LHU's only runs of the game.
Â
Sophomore
Andy Crum entered in the fourth with runners on second and third and nobody out but stranded both men in place. Crum induced a comebacker, a pop-up to second base and got a strikeout to escape the damage. He threw three shutout innings of relief, allowing two hits, and striking out two. In two outings this week, Crum threw six shutout innings – allowing four hits and striking out four.
Â
Marcinko led off Game 1 with a double down the left-field line, but it was the only hit for the Raiders until Baggett singled with two outs in the seventh inning. LHU starter Jacob Belinda threw a complete-game with 10 strikeouts. Baggett would score SU's lone run after twice advancing on wild pitches and eventually scoring on an error.
Â
Shippensburg will host Shepherd at 3 p.m. Tuesday in a nine-inning, non-conference game from Fairchild Field.Â
