SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team struck early with a five-run first inning Saturday and never looked back in a 10-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown at Fairchild Field.
The win for Shippensburg (6-10) was the 250th for head coach
Matt Jones in his tenure at Shippensburg. Jones now sits at 398 wins for his career, in which he has spent time as the head coach for Elizabethtown and SU.
The Raiders took advantage of four errors by UPJ to score five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore
Grant Hoover, junior
Ryan McMillen, freshman
Tommy Baggett and sophomore
Nick Spangler each drove in a run in the first as SU batted around.
The Raiders added three more in the second inning as senior
Mike Marcinko doubled and senior
Austin Allison walked in front of sophomore
Dalton Hoiles, who unloaded a bomb to left field.
The three-run shot by Hoiles – his third home run of the season – put the Raiders up 8-0. Freshman
Cash Gladfelter made it 9-0 with an RBI single in the third inning.
That was more than enough run support for senior
Rich Michaud, who pitched 6.2 innings for SU, allowing a run on five hits while tying a season-high with six strikeouts. Senior
Kyle McClintock allowed his inherited runner from Michaud to score, but the lefty finished his afternoon by throwing 1.1 scoreless frames.
Freshman
Zack Sims worked around a single and a hit by pitch to pitch a scoreless ninth inning.
Hoiles was the lone Raider to record a three-hit game as he finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. McMillen, who also doubled in a run in the sixth inning, Marcinko, Spangler and Gladfelter all had two-hit games.
Allison finished with three runs scored despite not having a hit as he walked four times. Allison is just the second SU player to walk four times in a game in the last four seasons.
Cody Ezolt was issued four free passes on March 24, 2015 against IUP.
SU will play a non-conference game Tuesday at Wilmington (Del.) at 3 p.m. before beginning PSAC East play next weekend.
