Baseball Drops Pair of Slugfests at UPJ, 18-13 and 14-8

SU totals 23 hits and four homers in doubleheader

The Shippensburg University baseball team swung the bats well Friday, but dropped a pair of high-scoring affairs to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division foe Pitt-Johnstown, 18-13 and 14-8, at Point Stadium.

Shippensburg (5-10) hit .365 (23-for-63) in the two games combined, including two doubles, a triple and four home runs. Leading the charge was sophomore Dalton Hoiles, who totaled six hits in eight at-bats while recording a double, triple and a home run.

Hoiles leads SU this season with 10 extra-base hits and 16 RBIs.

Junior Ryan McMillen also had a fine day for SU, going 4-for-7 with a home run in each game and six RBIs. Freshman Cash Gladfelter also had four hits and two RBIs.

In his first two starts of his career, freshman Tommy Baggett reached four times with three hits and a walk in two games. Senior Austin Allison had three hits, three RBIs and four runs scored. Senior Mike Marcinko hit his team-high fourth home run of the season – a solo shot in the second game.

SU put together decent leads in both games, as the Raiders jumped out to a 6-0 advantage through three innings in the first game – a nine-inning contest – before the Mountain Cats stormed back with a 10-run fourth inning and six more runs in the fifth.

In the seven-inning second game, SU built a 6-4 advantage entering the bottom of the sixth inning. However, another UPJ 10-run inning did in the Raiders as the Mountain Cats pulled away for the doubleheader sweep.

The final game of a three-game series between the Raiders and Mountain Cats will take place at Fairchild Field in Shippensburg Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
