SU Baseball Falls in Doubleheader at UNC-Pembroke, 10-6 and 13-0

SU totals 19 hits in pair of losses

The Shippensburg University baseball team encountered a hot lineup Saturday as it dropped a pair of games at UNC-Pembroke, 10-6 and 13-0, in a doubleheader at Cox Field in Pembroke.

Shippensburg (3-6) finished with 19 hits on the day, including 11 in the Game 1 loss, as six different Raiders had at least two hits. Sophomore Grant Hoover, junior Ryan McMillen and freshman Jack Goertzen all had three singles and a run scored.

Senior Austin Allison also had three hits, including a triple and two RBIs. Senior Mike Marcinko had a pair of singles, two runs scored and a stolen base. Marcinko is now 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts this season.

Freshman Cash Gladfelter also recorded two hits while sophomore Dalton Hoiles finished with a double and two RBIs.

With Game 1 tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning, Hoiles hit an RBI double to right-center field to give SU the lead. However, the Braves responded by scoring nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to open up an eight-run advantage.

SU scored three runs in the eighth on a two-run triple by Allison and a sacrifice fly by Hoiles. McMillen led off the ninth inning with a single and later scored on an error.

Junior Mark Curtis pitched the first 5.1 innings of Game 1, allowing five runs and striking out four. Game 2 starter, sophomore Gabe Mosser, struck out three in 3.1 innings.

Freshman Michael Hope had a fine relief outing in the second game, striking out five in 2.1 scoreless innings. Senior Seth LeFever and freshman Zack Sims each pitched a scoreless inning of relief Saturday.

SU and UNC-Pembroke will finish their three-game weekend series Sunday with a noon start.
