The Shippensburg University baseball team brought the tying run to the plate in the final three innings Sunday but could not complete a comeback in a 4-2 loss at UNC-Pembroke.
Â
Shippensburg (3-7) had seven hits on the day, including two each by the top two hitters in its lineup – senior
Mike Marcinko and sophomore
Grant Hoover.
Â
Hoover hit an RBI single in the fifth inning for SU while Marcinko hit a solo home run – his second dinger of the season – in the ninth inning.
Â
SU started senior
Rich Michaud, who allowed four runs in 3.2 innings before giving way to fellow senior
Marcus Shippey. Shippey was outstanding in relief, allowing just one hit in 4.1 scoreless innings to finish the game for SU.
Â
Shippey needed just 47 pitches, walking none and striking out four.
Â
The Raiders trailed 4-1 entering the seventh inning when they put runners on first and third with one out for Marcinko, who encountered a bit of bad luck as he lined into an inning-ending double play.
Â
In the eighth inning, SU put runners on second and third with one out, and later loaded the bases with two outs, but could not come away with a run.
Â
With two outs in the ninth, Marcinko lifted a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field wall to make it a 4-2 game. Spangler followed with a single, but he was stranded at first when the game came to an end.
Â
Junior
Ryan McMillen reached base three times Sunday with a hit and two walks. Sophomore
Dalton Hoiles and freshman
Cash Gladfelter each had a single for SU.
Â
The Raiders are scheduled to begin their home slate Saturday with a doubleheader against Le Moyne beginning at noon.
