Women’s Swimming Gets Record From O’Toole in Friday Dual Meet at Clarion

SU drops the meet by just seven points to the Golden Eagles

Sophomore Stephanie O'Toole broke the school record in the 400-yard individual medley (IM) on Friday night and did so in an early-season dual meet, as the Shippensburg University women's swimming team went on the road to face fellow Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent Clarion and finished within seven points of the Golden Eagles.

On Friday night, O'Toole not only swam an NCAA 'B' cut of 4:30.39 in the 400 IM to break Rikki Sargent's school record by two seconds, but she also swam a NCAA 'B' cut of 1:04.62 in the 100-yard breaststroke that stands within five-tenths of a second of another school record. She won a third event, the 200-yard backstroke in 2:04.84, and was just one second shy of a third NCAA 'B' cut.

O'Toole has made an incredible impact on the Raider record books thus far in her debut season. In addition to her school records in the 400 IM and the 100-yard backstroke (57.72), O'Toole already ranks among SU's all-time Top 10 in five other events: 100 freestyle (9th, 53.31), 200 backstroke (3rd), 100 breaststroke (2nd), 200 breaststroke (2nd, 2:21.13), 200 IM (4th, 2:08.86).

Friday's meet began when sophomore Carly Alvarado, junior Nicole Martorella, O'Toole and sophomore Sidney Owens teamed up for a win in the 200-yard medley relay, swimming 1:51.06.

SU totaled an impressive 16 PSAC cuts on the night, including on all three of its swims in the 100-yard breaststroke. O'Toole had her time of 1:04.62; Martorella swam 1:10.56, and freshman Grace Tothero swam 1:10.96.

Shippensburg won a total of seven events on the night. Junior MacKenna Angert had the top time in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming 2:01.65, while junior Erin Fife earned gold in the 200-yard butterfly on a time of 2:14.96. Angert also had a PSAC cut in the 500 freestyle (5:27.65), while Fife had another in the 100 freestyle (56.22).

Owens had a strong night – winning the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.26 – while taking second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.41) and 400 IM (4:49.69). All of her swims were PSAC cuts. Alvarado placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.04) and third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.09) with PSAC cuts.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Tothero had a second-place finish and PSAC cut of 2:32.59, while Martorella was third with a PSAC cut of 2:34.81.

Clarion gained its ground on the Raiders in Friday evening's dual primarily through the sprint events – posting the two fastest times in both the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 50-yard freestyle. The Golden Eagles also had the two fastest swimmers in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Saturday's meet at Gannon has been canceled, so the next competition for the Raiders will be in two weeks at the all-important Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason University.
