The Shippensburg University women's swimming team put forth more exceptional performances on Saturday in a tri-meet with West Chester hosted by Southern Connecticut State, winning three more events and splitting the scores with the two schools.
Sophomore
Stephanie O'Toole won two more events on Saturday, giving her three victories in three individual swims for the weekend. O'Toole won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:25.22 – putting her fifth all-time in SU history for the event. She also won the 200-yard individual medley (IM) with a time of 2:08.86 – ranking her fourth all-time in SU history for the event.
Freshman
Grace Tothero and sophomore
Sidney Owens each had solid swims and third-place finishes. Tothero completed the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:32.88, and Owens finished the 200-yard IM in 2:17.72. Owens also paced SU in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.76 seconds.
Junior
Erin Fife was narrowly edged in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a second-place time of 1:00.88. Sophomore
Carly Alvarado was second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.35, with junior
MacKenna Angert touching the wall in 2:15.62.
Sophomore
Lauren Ellis completed the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.09 and was SU's pacesetter in the 1,650-yard freestyle, compiling a time of 19:45.47.
For the second straight day, SU started its day with a big relay win. Alvarado, junior
Nicole Martorella, Fife and O'Toole aced the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.54 – winning by more than two seconds. The meet concluded with Ellis, Angert, Fife and Owens posting a third-place time in the 400-yard freestyle relay of 3:53.04.
"It was really exciting to start the meet off with a school record yesterday, and to set the tone for good racing," head coach
Tim Verge said. "We haven't had a record broken in a dual meet in a long time. It helped put us up in position for a great relay."
Verge added: "We have good range and depth, which is exciting. I think we can do a lot. We'll be figuring out some combinations, but we had some good swims this weekend."
Shippensburg returns to competition October 18 at IUP.
