The Shippensburg University men's swimming team capped off a productive two-day weekend on Saturday, competing in nine events as it wrapped up its tri-meet with West Chester and Southern Connecticut State.
 
The morning began with the 1,650-yard freestyle, an endurance event in which freshman Jeff Beyer put forth a second-place swim of 17:21.55. It's another excellent time in a distance event for Beyer, who swam the 500-yard freestyle last night. Beyer was also SU's pacesetter in the 200-yard freestyle, swimming 1:48.24.
 
Junior Kristian Voulopos notched a third-place time in the 200-yard backstroke of 2:03.00, and freshman Adam Fox paced the Raiders in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.65 seconds.
 
Freshman Christian Gamboa also had a good swim in the "mile," posting a time of 17:27.93, and paced SU in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:20.62. Freshman Nick Bloom had a SU-best time of 2:07.16 in the 200-yard IM.
 
Voulopos, Beyer, Gamboa and senior Shaun Smith teamed up for a third-place time in the 400-yard freestyle relay of 3:16.73.
 
"I thought our men had a strong weekend, showing our strengths in different events that we haven't been strong in before," head coach Tim Verge said. "I think they did an outstanding job of bringing the group together, and we got great swims from our new guys. They were excited for the ability to get out there and compete."
 
Verge added: "It's a long season, and this was a good place to start. It's a long trip, and that took a lot out of us, but they battled and competed really well."
 
Shippensburg returns to competition October 18 at IUP.
