Baseball Evens Conference Record After Sunday Sweep of Mansfield, 5-1 and 13-9

SU smacks 24 hits in its doubleheader victory, gets complete-game win in opener from Shippey

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team evened its conference record Sunday with a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader sweep of Mansfield, winning 5-1 and 13-9 in games played at Fairchild Field. Mansfield was the home team in both games and had to play at SU because Shaute Field is currently unplayable.

Shippensburg (6-12, 3-3 PSAC East) got a complete-game four-hitter in the opener from junior Marcus Shippey, who struck out 11 and allowed a lone unearned run. He scattered four singles and recorded SU's first complete game of the year.

The Raiders overcame a 1-0 deficit in Game 1 with three runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore third baseman Ryan McMillen singled through the left side to plate two runs and give SU the lead. A third run scored in the inning on an RBI-double by freshman designated hitter Grant Hoover.

In the seventh, freshman Dalton Hoiles drew a bases-loaded walk and a second run would later score on a strikeout that had a wild pitch, allowing senior Cody Ezolt to reach.

Game 2 was one for the bats, as the two teams combined for 22 runs and 32 hits. Shippensburg scored a run in all seven innings and smacked a season-high 18 hits – the team's most in one game since Mar. 3, 2013.

The two teams exchanged the lead in each of the first five at-bats. Mansfield (1-11, 0-4) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first against SU starter Rich Michaud, but SU scored three runs in the top of the second. Mansfield countered with three runs in the bottom of the second, but the Raiders fired back with five runs in the third and never looked back at that point.

Junior center fielder Austin Allison led off Game 2 with a homer and finished 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and a stolen base. Junior shortstop Mike Marcinko shook off a tough game in the field by going 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored.

McMillen had two doubles and scored twice, while sophomore Jake Kennedy and Ezolt each had two hits. Sophomore Josh Kutchey won Game 2 in relief; he threw three innings after taking over in the third inning for Michaud. Hoover and junior Thomas Swartz combined to get the final five outs.

Shippensburg hosts Mansfield again tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Fairchild Field.
