SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University wrestling team got bonus points from junior
Cameron Throckmorton and freshman
Mike Springer on Monday night and used a decision at heavyweight from sophomore
Francis Slover to defeat visiting LIU Post, 22-19, in a Super Region 1 dual meet at Heiges Field House.
Â
Shippensburg (7-13) concluded its regular-season dual meet schedule by splitting its 10 bouts with LIU Post (4-15) but the Raiders benefitted from a forfeit at 125 pounds to gain extra points. Both teams had one victory by fall and one major decision, yet LIU Post had three decisions and SU had two decisions and the forfeit win.
Â
The Raiders fell behind after Joe Calderone, No. 2 seed in Super Region 1, won 7-2 at 133 pounds and Jesse Meaney, No. 3 seed in Super Region 1, scored a third-period pin at 141 pounds.
Â
Throckmorton, ranked No. 5 nationally, survived an early shot from Matt Langan at 149 pounds and then quickly took it to his competitor, scoring a takedown in 30 seconds and eventually notching a victory by fall in 1:03. It was Throckmorton's 11th-straight win and marked bonus points in seven of his 11 bouts at 149 pounds.
Â
Springer responded with a convincing 8-0 major decision at 157 pounds. He used a takedown in each period, an escape and a 4:12 riding-time advantage for his 12th victory of the season.
Â
At 174 pounds, sophomore
Brett Pastore wrestled up and was strong in his seven minutes on the mat, notching his first victory of the year at that weight class with a 7-1 decision. Pastore also managed a takedown in each period and had cut free his opponent late in pursuit of a major decision.
Â
The Pioneers tied the match at 19-19 after a decision at 184 pounds and a major decision at 197 pounds.
Â
At heavyweight, Slover made a move off a shot by Jake Horton to score a first-period takedown and a 2-0 lead. Horton escaped in the second period, setting up a third period in which the score was 2-1 in Slover's favor. Another strong takedown gave Slover a 4-1 lead before Horton escaped again. With Horton needing a takedown to tie he attempted several shots on Slover, but the SU heavyweight responded to a late attack by using impressive movement to manage a takedown at the buzzer.
Â
Shippensburg will have its wrestle-offs later this week and then prepare for the 2015 NCAA Super Region I Championships, to be held Feb. 27-28 at West Liberty University.
