SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University women's swimming team won eight of the 11 contested events Friday night and had seven different swimmers post an individual event victory as the Raiders defeated Gannon, 116-84, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Confererence (PSAC) dual meet held inside Donald N. Miller Pool.
 
From the get-go, SU continued its excellent swimming of this season. Freshman Carly Alvarado, sophomore Nicole Martorella, sophomore Erin Fife and senior Carolyn Meier teamed up to ace the 400-yard medley relay in 4:03.81.
 
All four of those swimmers were among SU's winners on the night. Alvarado impressed in the 100-yard backstroke, swimming 1:01.24. Martorella continues to excel in the 100-yard breaststroke, swimming 1:09.47 in a narrow win over senior Rikki Sargent. Fife was a touch away from a sub-60 time in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming 1:00.27, while Meier won her signature event, the 200-yard freestyle, in 1:58.35.
 
Freshman Lauren Ellis finished second to Meier in that race, swimming 1:59.99, and later won the 500-yard freestyle out of Lane 6, posting a time of 5:24.17. Sophomore MacKenna Angert won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a strong time of 11:03.23 and later took second behind Ellis in the 500-yard freestyle by swimming 5:25.15.
 
Freshman Sidney Owens, meanwhile, won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14. Fife (2:15.67) and Sargent (2:16.81) finished 2-3, as all three swimmers in the event posted PSAC cuts.
 
Overall on the night, SU had more than 50 percent of its individual swims (15/27) surpass the PSAC qualifying standard.
 
Shippensburg hosts Clarion at 1 p.m. Saturday on Senior Day. The team will recognize Meier and Sargent in a pre-meet ceremony on the deck.
