The Shippensburg University men's soccer team opened the 2014 season with a dramatic come-from-behind, 2-1 overtime victory Friday night over Chestnut Hill from David See Field.
The Raiders (1-0) were unable to get on the board until just 16 seconds remained on the clock in regulation. A corner kick deflected back to senior
Josh Gannon who gained control and lofted a cross into the box. Junior
Brooke Moyer leaped for the ball and, with his back to the goal, headed the ball over and past the Chestnut Hill goalkeeper for the equalizer.
The heroics continued in overtime when graduate
Renaldo Garcia launched a dart from 35 yards out into the top right corner of the net for the game winner with 1:18 remaining. The strike was made possible by another accurate pass from Gannon, who tallied his second assist of the night.
The Griffins (0-1) kept pace with SU in the first half, out-shooting the Raiders 7-6, but were out-shot 14-5 in the second half. The Raiders also compiled all six of their corner kicks in the second half.
Chestnut Hill goalkeeper James Jackson turned away seven shots while SU sophomore goalkeeper
Evan Raimist made three saves in his collegiate debut.
The Raiders return to action Sunday when they take on Georgian Court at 3:30 p.m. from David See Field.
