SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team was in control Sunday afternoon as the Raiders defeated Georgian Court, 3-0, in a non-conference tilt from David See Field.
Shippensburg (2-0) avenged a 2013 loss to Georgian Court (0-1-1) by out-shooting the visiting Lions 28-6 and posting an 11-7 advantage in corner kicks.
The first goal came by virtue of some good fortune in the 17th minute, as the GCU keeper fumbled a potential pickup due to pressure applied by senior
Fred Lucas. Lucas dribbled the ball away from the sprawled-out keeper, and deposited a shot into the back of an empty net.
Exactly 16 minutes later, sophomore
Jeff Ballard sent a low cross through the center of the scoring area that tipped off Lucas's foot and maintained a pace toward the left side of the box, where junior
Derek Adams slammed it home for a 2-0 lead that the Raiders carried into the intermission.
SU kept buzzing in the second half against GCU's replacement keeper and added to its tally in the 56th minute. Senior
Derrick Roy bent in a cross to the lower corner of the goal that sophomore
Robert Furfaro kicked in for a three-goal Raider lead.
Sophomore
Evan Raimist notched his first collegiate shutout and recorded two saves – his best coming on a diving stop of Sebastian Gostynski just a minute after Furfaro's tally.
The Raiders will travel Wednesday to face Wilmington (Del.), a 2013 NCAA Tournament qualifier, in a non-conference road matchup at 4 p.m. from the Wilmington University Sports Complex.
