Senior reliever
Austin Bartley tied the PSAC record with his 76
th career appearance in Game 2 on Wednesday afternoon, but the Shippensburg University baseball team's bats were held silent as the Raiders totaled just seven hits in a pair of PSAC East road losses to Bloomsburg from Litwhiler Field. SU lost the opening game of the doubleheader 5-2 and the nightcap 4-1.
The losses drop the 23-13 Raiders to fifth place in the PSAC East standings before this weekend's four-game series with third-place West Chester (12-8 in the division). The 23-13 Huskies improve to 15-5 in the division and take over the top spot in the standings.
Game 1 remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Bloomsburg scored on a wild pitch, added two runs on a fielding error and a fourth on a triple. BU added another run in the fifth before SU attempted a rally in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs with two outs and bringing the tying run to the plate.
With runners at the corners, senior third baseman
Cal Hogan singled to center before senior center fielder
Michael Douglas followed up with an RBI double down the left-field line. BU then brought in pitcher Cody Heane, who induced a fly out to center to end the game.
In Game 2, SU scored a run in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly courtesy of senior first baseman
Pat Kregeloh, but Bloomsburg scored two runs in the second to take the lead before adding two more in the sixth.
On the mound, senior
Shawn Patterson and sophomore
Rich Michaud were each touched for two earned runs on six hits in four innings of work. Patterson struck out three in the opener and Michaud fanned four in the second game.
Sophomore
Thomas Swartz threw two innings of scoreless relief in Game 1 with three strikeouts and one hit given up while sophomore
Kyle McClintock and Bartley finished the game in relief.
Bartley earned the final two outs of the sixth as the appearance gives him sole possession of the school career record and ties him with Millersville's Eric Eckert (1997-00) for the PSAC mark.
SU will travel to the Golden Rams on Friday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader before finishing the series on Saturday with a twinbill at 1 p.m. from Fairchild Field.
