Baseball Drops Pair of One-Run Decisions at West Chester on Friday, 7-6 and 2-1

SU falls to 6-9 in one-run games, Raiders will look to rally Saturday when it hosts the back end of the series

The Shippensburg University baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games in its PSAC East doubleheader Friday at West Chester, coming up short by 7-6 and 2-1 scores to the host Golden Rams at Serpico Stadium. Game 2 needed eight innings to determine a victor.

Shippensburg (23-15, 10-12 PSAC East) has had nine of its 15 losses this season come by just one run, including four in PSAC Eastern Division play. The Raiders out-hit the Golden Rams on the day, 17-11, and got another splendid pitching performance from senior Pat Kregeloh.

In Game 2, Kregeloh allowed two hits and an unearned run through the first seven innings and finished with a career-high 11 strikeouts, marking the third 10-plus strikeout pitching performance of his career (all coming this season).

Senior Michael Douglas was 4-for-9 on the day, smacking a pair of hits in each game, while contributing an RBI-single. Fellow senior Cal Hogan had four hits as well Friday, including a 3-for-4 performance in Game 1. Kregeloh also had a hit in each game, including an RBI-single in Game 1.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth in Game 2, a hit batter, single and walk loaded the bases for West Chester (22-12, 14-8). SU made a defensive replacement and brought an extra defender into the infield in an effort to prevent the tying run from scoring. The next batter, however, hit a ball up the middle that was fielded behind the second-base bag but the throw home was not in time.

The lone Raider run in the nightcap came on bases-loaded fielding error in the fourth after SU loaded the bases with a two-out rally that also featured a single, hit batsman and walk.

SU fell behind 7-2 after three innings in the opener and responded with four runs in the final three innings but could not manage to tie the score, as WCU reliever Ron Scull entered with two outs in the seventh and stranded two runners on base.

Junior Cody Ezolt was 2-for-3 in the opening game with a solo home run and a walk. Freshman Isaac Stern was 2-for-3 with a walk, stolen base and two runs scored.

Sophomore Marcus Shippey suffered the Game 1 loss, lasting just 2.2 innings. The Raider pitchers struggled with control in Game 1, as three moundmen combined for six walks and six wild pitches.

The Raiders are 14-3 at home this season and will look to use their success at Fairchild Field to try and snap a season-long four-game losing streak tomorrow when it hosts the Golden Rams at 1 p.m.
