Wrestling Opens PSAC Dual Meet Schedule at Millersville, Falls 22-16 to Marauders

SU gets pin from Etter; major decision from Throckmorton, decisions from Hafer, Paige

The Shippensburg University wrestling team opened its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Division II dual meet schedule on Wednesday by winning four bouts but dropping a 22-16 decision to rival Millersville from Pucillo Gymnasium.

On a night in which 11 of the 20 wrestlers between the two teams were freshmen, Millersville responded from an early 7-3 deficit with consecutive victories from 149 through 165 pounds, capped off by a pin. With the score 19-16 in MU's favor entering the final match, Marauder freshman heavyweight Jordan Wertz used a second-period takedown and near fall to achieve a 6-1 decision that clinched the win for the home team.

Junior Luke Etter secured a pin with eight seconds remaining in his bout at 174 pounds to get the Raiders within three points, 16-13. He was on pace for a 12-4 major decision before securing the victory by fall.

Junior Cameron Throckmorton improved to 4-0 this season with a 16-5 major decision over Nick Haegele. He has picked up bonus points in three of his four wins.

At 197 pounds, sophomore Jalal Paige defeated Aram Moffitt, 7-3, in a re-match of the 2013 NCAA Super Region 1 third-place match. Paige's victory over Moffitt last season secured his trip to the NCAA Championships.

Freshman Mike Hafer improved his record to 2-2 for the young campaign, battling to a 4-2 decision at 133 pounds over fellow freshman Zach Clingan.

The closest match of the night came at 149 pounds, where freshman Mike Springer dropped a 6-4 decision in sudden defeat. His opponent, Nico Demetrio, escaped with nine seconds left in the third period to force overtime as that point counter-balanced Springer's riding-time advantage. With 29 seconds left in the sudden-victory period, Demetrio notched a takedown.

Shippensburg travels to Lock Haven on Friday for a 7 p.m. dual meet with the Bald Eagles from Thomas Field House.
