SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team scored in the fourth minute of play Tuesday night but could not keep the visiting Golden Rams off the board, as visiting West Chester notched a 2-1 victory in a league matchup at David See Field.
Shippensburg (3-7-2, 1-5 PSAC) opened the scoring with a pretty set piece off a free kick. After a foul was committed just outside the box, senior
Derrick Roy received an short-cross entry off the free kick of senior
Josh Gannon and re-directed it into the lower right corner of the goal to give the Raiders the lead.
West Chester (6-5, 4-2) answered five minutes later, as a failed clear made its way outside the box to Christian Benner. The Telford native ripped the loose ball over a crowd and into the lower left part of the net to tie the score, 1-1.
The Raiders nearly took the lead in the opening minute of the second half, but a shot by senior
Fred Lucas was stopped at close range by WCU keeper Matt Palmer.
The Golden Rams did not muster a shot for the first 28 minutes of the second half, but managed to score the game-winning goal with 12 minutes to play. Brett Glasco converted an odd-man rush by slicing a shot into the lower-right portion of the goal after an Alex Lean pass.
Shippensburg recorded a 16-13 advantage in shots and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore
Evan Raimist made three saves for the Raiders – all coming in the first half. Palmer had eight saves for West Chester.
Shippensburg travels to East Stroudsburg on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest against the Warriors.
