SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday with Alderson Broaddus in a non-league match at David See Field, as each team scored a goal in a 42-second span of the second half but neither could ultimately prevail.
Shippensburg (3-6-2) had a bevy of scoring chances in the contest – out-shooting Alderson Broaddus (4-7-1) by a 29-12 margin despite the Battlers recording one more corner kick than the Raiders.
The difference was AB goalkeeper Ricard Lao. Of his 11 saves, several were made at point-blank range. Senior
Fred Lucas was stymied in double overtime on a close-range chance from the left side of the box, while senior
Derrick Roy had a high-octane shot stopped early in the first half.
SU's lone goal of the game occurred on the only real mistake of the day by Lao. Graduate
Renaldo Garcia sent a cross into the box that ricocheted off the hands of Lao and trickled behind him in the box. The ball crossed the line before either Lao or oncoming sophomore forward
Colin McConnell made contact, giving Garcia the goal.
AB managed an odd-man break shortly after the tally, and equalized the score within the same minute as Garcia's goal. Deshawn Parker sent a ball through the right side, where Luiz Cartagena had plenty of room to sneak a shot into the lower-left corner from about 15 yards out.
Sophomore
Evan Raimist did not have a chance on that particular AB shot, but he was strong in goal once again and finished with seven saves. He has allowed one goal or less in seven of 11 games this year.
Shippensburg hosts West Chester in a PSAC clash at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday from David See Field.
