SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University swimming teams will honor nine seniors Friday night before its second and final home dual meet of the 2012-13 season. SU hosts Edinboro at 5 p.m. Friday from Donald N. Miller Pool located inside Heiges Field House.
The SU men's and women's swim teams returned to campus at the start of the New Year and have endured rigorous and steady training sessions since their arrival.
In addition to its importance to assess the team's training, Friday's meet will also mark the last home competition for four women [
Julia Brownrigg,
Keeley Chenet,
Alayna Ryan and
Sara Small] and five men [
Stew Conard,
Mike Keefe,
Eddie LaNoue,
Sean Minford and
Eric Naylor] who have played a major role in SU's success in recent years.
“We are really looking forward to Friday,” head coach
Tim Verge '89 said. “This is our last home meet of the year so consequently it is senior night. There's always a bit more excitement and enthusiasm. We want to send the seniors out with some great support.”
The Raiders are five weeks away from the 2013 PSAC Championships. Other than Friday's meet and a February 2 competition at Bucknell, no other competitions are on the SU schedule in advance of the conference meet.
This week's opponent, Edinboro, placed third on the men's side and sixth on the women's side at last year's PSAC Championships.
“Edinboro is a super team,” Verge said. “Their Head Coach, Chris Rhodes, is an old assistant of mine from Ashland; I know he is a terrific coach. We beat their men up there last year in the final relay and I am sure they remember that. This is the time of year where everyone is working really hard and there will be some great races.”
