WILSON, N.C. - The Shippensburg University baseball team exploded for 18 runs in its doubleheader with Barton College on Saturday afternoon from Nixon Field but earned a split with the Bulldogs, dropping the opener 13-6 before rebounding with a 12-2 win in the nightcap.
Shippensburg (3-6) never trailed in the second game and took control with a seven-run fifth inning. Senior catcher
Sean Killian and freshman right fielder
Cody Kulp each hit their second home runs of the season in the game, while the Raiders smashed 14 hits in support of senior starting pitcher
Tim Freshour.
Kulp hit a two-run shot to cap off a three-run first inning, while a sacrifice fly from senior center fielder
Tyler Redick gave Shippensburg a 5-1 lead entering the fifth. The Raiders continued an early-season trend by scoring all seven of their runs with two outs in the decisive inning, with the highlights being a two-run single from senior second baseman
Kyle Rhoades and a three-run shot from Killian.
Senior
Jason Kelly struggled in the opening game, allowing four earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched. The Raiders trailed 9-3 after five innings and trimmed the deficit to just three before Barton pulled away with a four runs in bottom of the eighth off juniors
Phil Harnick and
Kyle Chronister.
Freshour earned his first victory of the season by allowing just two runs and five hits in six innings of work while striking out seven batters. Killian had four RBIs in the second game and finished the day with a total of six, while junior
Kevin Scholly hit a two-run homer in the opening-game loss.
Sophomore shortstop
Steve McCardell continued his outstanding start to the season with a 3-for-4 performance and two runs scored in the nightcap that followed a 2-for-4 performance in the opener. Through nine games and 24 at-bats this season, McCardell is batting .500.
With hits in both games, Redick has now compiled a 22-game hitting streak dating back to the end of last season that ties Chad Stecker's school record set during the 2004 season. During the streak, he is hitting .432 (38-88) with 18 RBIs.
Redick has a chance to break the streak tomorrow as Shippensburg closes out its three-game series from Barton. The single game begins at 1 p.m.
