SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Led by wins in 13 of the 22 scored events, the Shippensburg University men's and women's swimming teams swept a home dual meet with Division I Canisius Friday night at Donald N. Miller Pool inside Heiges Field House. The Red Raiders posted a 113-89 victory while the women won 109-75.
It was the second meet of the year for both Shippensburg teams and the second home meet as well after the two lost to defending PSAC champion West Chester back on October 6.
Junior #John Miller# was a two-event winner for Shippensburg, capturing both the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke to gain a total of 18 points for the Red Raiders. His time of 2:04.12 led a 1-2 Shippensburg finish in the 200 IM as sophomore Shane Wolter came in second with a time of 2:05.67.
Junior #Kevin Riley# led a 1-2-3 Red Raider finish in the 200-yard butterfly as he finished with a time of 2:06.74, less than one second ahead of freshman Alan Snyder who posted a time of 2:07.53. Sophomore #Evan Wentzel# came in third.
Other winners for Shippensburg included freshman Josh Nyce in the 200-yard freestyle and junior John Lerch in the 200-yard backstroke.
In addition, the team of sophomore Nate Ryan, junior Gabe Oropollo, junior #Alex Fox# and junior Will Kane placed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.89, just ahead of the 'A' team from Canisius that finished in 1:42.10.
On the women's side, the Lady Raiders won 10 of 11 events, although only seven were scored. The team of junior Suzy Wiechelt, freshman #Meghan Herr#, junior #Molly McNeil# and freshman Anna Kinard started the night off with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in a time of 1:56.64.
Herr and Wiechelt were also individual winners with Herr placing first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.40, ahead of junior Mandi Foltz, and Wiechelt capturing the top time in the 200-yard backstroke with a mark of 2:19.64, seven seconds faster than freshman #Rachel Perugini# who came in second.
Herr also placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:32.66, but the event was not scored for Shippensburg.
Freshman Amy Fisher won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:17.26 before finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly.
In addition to Foltz, the three remaining returning All-Americans for Shippensburg also competed Friday evening as junior Theresa Simcic, sophomore Whitney Garner and senior #Kelcie Baber# were all winners.
Simcic placed first in the 50-yard freestyle while Garner and Baber were winners in the 200 IM and 100 free, respectively.
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Saturday, November 3 when they conclude a three-meet homestand to open the 2007 season against Clarion beginning at 1:00 p.m. Both Golden Eagles team finished second behind West Chester at last year's PSAC Championships.
