RECAP: Baseball drops both games of Saturday doubleheader at No. 16 Millersville

Raiders lose 9-0 and 9-3 to the Marauders

The Shippensburg University baseball team lost both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader to No. 16 Millersville on Saturday, falling by scores of 9-0 and 9-3 to the Marauders on rainy, windy, cold day at Cooper Park.

Shippensburg (15-19, 9-6 PSAC East) had its eight-game winning streak snapped by Millersville (24-8, 10-2), as the Marauders got strong starts from Jeff Taylor and Connor Cook. MU used quick starts in each game to take leads it would not relinquish.

SU is scheduled to next play at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pitt-Johnstown.

Game 1: Millersville 9, Shippensburg 0

The Marauders opened the scoring in the second inning off a Chase Simmons three-run home run that came with two outs. Millersville scored five runs in the fifth inning to take control.

Sophomore Joe Barbera was the only Raider to reach base more than once; he had a walk in the first inning and a single in the fifth inning.

Junior Noah Nabholz made the start and went 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits. He walked three and struck out one. Sophomore Ethan Miller and redshirt-freshman Brock Piper worked in relief.

Taylor threw 6.1 shutout innings for Millersville, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out nine.

Game 2: Millersville 9, Shippensburg 3

The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-double by Barbera that drove in graduate JuJu Cason. The Marauder bats continued their hot hitting from Game 1 with three runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second. MU led 8-1 after six.

Graduate Matt Shilling hit a two-run home run in the seventh to drive in redshirt-sophomore Justin Byler. Barbera finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with the RBI-double, a walk in the sixth inning and a bunt single in the eighth. Byler singles and walked.

Sophomore Gabe Stotler went four innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits. He walked two and struck out four. Sophomore Kaleb Sophy pitched three innings in relief; he struck out three and allowed two runs. Sophomore Austen Labarre pitched the eighth, striking out one and allowing a solo home run.
