RECAP: Baseball drops road game at Johnstown, 7-6

SU totals 10 hits in the non-conference setback

The Shippensburg University baseball team lost 7-6 to Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday in a conference crossover game at Point Stadium.

Shippensburg (15-20) rallied from a 5-1 deficit after two innings to take a 6-5 lead, but a two-run home run in the seventh by Colin Pasone proved to be the difference for Pitt-Johnstown (15-15-1).

Junior Justin Darden had three of SU's 10 hits in the game, including RBI-singles in each of his first two at-bats. Darden also hit a ball that nearly left the park with two outs in the ninth inning but failed to clear the high wall in left field, and he was thrown out between first and second base to end the game.

Redshirt-sophomore Justin Byler had two hits, including a double and an RBI-single in the fifth that tied the game at 5-5. Byler also scored twice.

Senior Ben Werkheiser was 2-for-5. Sophomore Joe Barbera hit an RBI-single in the fourth, and sophomore Morgan Wyatt drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth that gave the Raiders a 6-5 lead.

Graduate JuJu Cason singled, walked, and stole a base.

Sophomore Ethan Miller got the start and went five innings, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. After some early struggled, Miller faced the minimum nine batters over his final three innings of work.

Redshirt-freshman Brock Piper worked 1.2 innings and was tagged with the loss. After a 1-2-3 sixth, Piper yielded the two-run home run to Pasone in the seventh. It was the only hit allowed by Piper, who walked two and struck out two.

Redshirt-freshman Cameron Goble and sophomore Austen Labarre combined to get four outs, pitching 1.1 shutout innings of relief.

Darden's single off the wall with two outs in the ninth was SU's only hit in the final four innings. Seth Shuey got the win for the Mountain Cats by pitching a scoreless seventh and eighth, and Brady Walker finished the ninth for the save. Right fielder Dylan Broderick was 2-for-3 with a double, walk and four RBIs, while leadoff hitter Mario Disso drew three walks and scored three runs.

Shippensburg will travel to Kutztown on Friday for a 2 p.m. conference clash with the Golden Bears.
