The Shippensburg University baseball team rallied from an early three-run deficit to post a 7-3 victory in 10 innings at Kutztown on Friday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at North Campus Field.
Shippensburg (16-20, 10-6 PSAC East) got a complete-game victory from redshirt-junior
Nick Zegna, who led the Raiders on the mound. In 10 innings, Zegna struck out nine batters, only allowed five hits, and gave up zero earned runs.
Zegna is the first Raider in 18 years to pitch 10 innings in a game. It's the first time since Evan Englebrook went 10 innings on April 29, 2004 in the PSAC Tournament, also against Kutztown.
Kutztown (9-23, 4-12) took a three-run lead in the first inning on three hits and three Raider errors. Mike Kelly, Ethan Martini and Gavin Moretski crossed the plate for the Golden Bears.
Shippensburg responded with a run of its own in the fourth inning when sophomore
Jafari Williams singled through the left side and drove in freshman
Carter Hinds.
In the seventh, senior
Ben Werkheiser hit a single that drove in sophomore
Joe Barbera to make it 3-2.
In the ninth inning, with runners on the corners and one out, Werkheiser hit another RBI-single to drive in Barbera and tie the game. SU stranded the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, but Zegna retired the Golden Bears three-up, three-down with two strikeouts to send the game into extra innings.
In extras, the Raiders put together a four-run 10th inning. Williams was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded which drove in redshirt-sophomore
Justin Byler, Barbera then hit a two-run single up the middle to drive in Hinds and graduate
JuJu Cason. Two batters later, Williams scored on a wild pitch to create the final margin of 7-3.
Sophomore
Andrew Chronister went 2-for-6 at the plate with two singles. Werkheiser reached base five times, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and two walks. Junior
Lake Lloyd went 2-for-4 with two singles and a walk. Barbera, Lloyd, Byler, Cason and Hinds all had a stolen base in the game.
Zegna allowed only two hits after the first inning and threw 110 pitches in his 10-inning complete game.
Shippensburg will host Kutztown at noon tomorrow for a doubleheader at Fairchild Field.
