SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team totaled 29 runs in a Friday sweep of Salem, winning by scores of 12-0 and 17-9 in a pair of seven-inning games at Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (20-20) totaled 31 hits, including eight doubles and four home runs, in an impressive day at the plate. Salem (14-30) finished with 14 hits – 12 of which came in Game 2.
Shippensburg will face Salem again tomorrow in a nine-inning game at 11 a.m. at Fairchild Field.
Game 1: Shippensburg 12, Salem 0
The Raiders led from the beginning to finish over Salem with the help of two five-run innings, including the first. Redshirt-junior
Nick Zegna got the start and went six shutout innings, allowing only one hit and struck out six. Redshirt-freshman
Cameron Goble pitched the final inning, allowing one hit and struck out one.
Sophomore
Joe Barbera went 3-for-5 at the plate including an RBI-single in the fifth inning and a run scored.
Senior
Ben Werkheiser hit 1-for-3 with a double and drew a walk for an RBI in fifth inning.
Junior
Justin Darden batted 1-for-2 with a walk, and two RBIs, including an RBI double in the first inning and a run scored.
Junior
Lake Lloyd went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI single in the first inning.
Graduate
JuJu Cason hit 3-for-4 for two runs scored, two doubles and three RBIs.
Freshman
Carter Hinds batted 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
Redshirt-sophomore
Andres Garcia hit a solo-home run in the sixth inning.
Game 2: Shippensburg 17, Salem 9
The Tigers took the lead in the first inning off a Scott Kondroik double which drove in Kobie Carpenter. In the bottom half of the inning the Raiders scored their first of four multi-run innings by driving in five runs off two home runs. Werkheiser hit a three-run home run and redshirt-sophomore
Justin Byler hit his first of two home runs in the game – a two-run shot.
In the second inning, Salem responded by scoring four runs of its own to tie the game at five. SU scored 11 runs over the final three innings to preserve the doubleheader sweep. All the starters for the Raiders had a hit.
Werkheiser finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBIs. Byler was 2-for-5 with two homers and five RBIs. Darden hit 3-for-4 with a run scored, a walk and three RBIs. Lloyd had a run scored, a walk and two RBIs.
Cason finished with two runs, an RBI-single in the sixth inning and a walk. Barbera went 2-for-3 with four runs scored, a walk and an RBI in the sixth inning. Hinds went 2-for-4 and a run scored. Sophomore
Jafari Williams hit 1-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.
