SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Jazmin Petrantonio tied a school record with six goals Friday as the Shippensburg University field hockey team defeated visiting Mercyhurst by an 8-0 score on a pleasant night from Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (3-3) got hat tricks in each half from Petrantonio, whose six goals are the most scored in a game by a Raider in 48 years. Petrantonio's six goals tie the single-game school records of Paulette Henry (1971 vs. Susquehanna) and Barbara Harper (1965 vs. Juniata). It is the first time that a Raider has scored six goals in an NCAA contest.
The Raiders had been shutout in each of their first two home matches before responding with its highest single-game goal output since Nov. 10 of last season, which, ironically, was another 8-0 shutout of Mercyhurst. SU generated 17 penalty corners and 17 shots on goal Friday night against the Lakers.
Sandwiched in Petrantonio's run of goals was the first career tally for freshman
Sydney Gillingham, who rifled home a goal in the third quarter after working a give-and-go with Petrantonio off a penalty corner.
Senior
Autumn Beattie capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter with just less than four minutes remaining, finishing a centering pass from senior
Megan Green to achieve her first collegiate goal.
Redshirt-sophomore
Megan Lay made some timely stops to preserve the shutout, finishing with four saves.
Petrantonio's previous single-game career high for goals was four, set twice last season (Southern Connecticut State, West Chester (NCAA Semifinals)). It is not yet researched if Petrantonio achieved a single-game points record, as it is unknown whether Henry or Harper had any assists in their respective six-goal games.
Shippensburg now has eight days before its next match; the Raiders next play at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 against Bloomsburg in the conference opener from Robb Sports Complex.
