RECAP: No. 6 Field Hockey Uses Strong Second Half to Defeat Bloomsburg, 5-1

Raiders score three times after the intermission; Petrantonio nets hat trick

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The No. 6 Shippensburg University field hockey team scored three times in the second half on Saturday to pull away from visiting Bloomsburg, defeating the Huskies by a 5-1 score in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener on a hot day at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg got a seven-point effort from junior Jazmin Petrantonio, who posted a hat trick for the second straight contest and also assisted on the final tally. Petrantonio has totaled 20 points (nine goals, two assists) over the team's last two games.

Petrantonio opened the scoring less than two minutes in by hammering home the rebound of her initial shot for her 10th goal of the season. With the score tied 1-1 midway through the second quarter, Petrantonio caged her 11th of the season off a penalty corner. The Raiders took a 2-1 lead into the intermission.

SU scored twice in a three-minute span of the third quarter to pull away, beginning with Petrantonio converting a shot deep inside the scoring arc for her 12th goal of the year. Soon after, sophomore Valen Alonso took a pass outside the arc, dribbled past two defenders, and sent a wicked reverse hit into the goal for her first goal of the year to make it 4-0.

In the fourth quarter, junior Emily Stauffer scored her second goal of the year by re-directing a Petrantonio entry high into the goal.

Redshirt-sophomore Megan Lay made two saves in the win, while senior Mikayla Cheney prevented a goal with a defensive save just moments before Alonso's goal.

At halftime, Shippensburg Field Hockey held a ceremony to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1979 AIAW Division II Championship team. Seven members of that team were present Saturday: captain Dee Cross, captain Diane Wilcox Bohenick, Julie Douglass Heller, Nancy Garlitz, graduate assistant coach Kristy Miller Jordan and athletic trainer John Revegno.

Shippensburg hosts East Stroudsburg at 1:35 p.m. Wednesday in a Division II showcase game from Robb Sports Complex. Myriad options for watching the match online are available HERE.
