SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Redshirt-junior
Charles Bowman broke a 35-year-old school record in the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday and the 4x100-meter relay also set a record to highlight an exemplary day for the Shippensburg University men's track & field team at the Paul Kaiser Classic held at Seth Grove Stadium.
Of Shippensburg's many exciting moments, a pair of standout individual performances were among the top spotlights. Bowman, who had flirted with Wayne Blatt's 1984 school record of 14.26 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles at multiple points this season, exceeded the long-standing mark on Saturday by running 14.24 seconds in the finals.
Bowman finished second overall to Wheeling Jesuit's Darius Berry; the SU redshirt-junior still set the school record despite nicking a hurdle late in his riveting race. Berry ran 14.12 seconds and now ranks 10th in the nation. Bowman's time puts him 16th on the national performance list. Both finals times were nearly two-tenths of a second faster than their times from prelims.
In the field, redshirt-freshman
Shamar Jenkins had a huge breakthrough in the triple jump with a staggering lifetime best of 51 feet (15.54 meters), a performance that slots him fourth on the national leaderboard and all but ensures him a trip to the NCAA Championships. Jenkins came within 6.5 inches of Steve Waithe's school record set in 2012.
The 4x100-meter relay squad of senior
Calvin Dennis,
Chris Craig, junior
Dreux Stamford and freshman
Roland Miles made SU history by running 40.87 seconds – an effort that ranks 22nd nationally (18th when excluding multiple relays from a school).
Saturday's effort breaks the old school record from 2011 (40.95 seconds) set by Jon Eisemann, Kevin Marshall, Herman Kirkland and Romarr Mayne.
A whole host of solid times and marks were abound, with the 110-meter hurdle finals also yielding a season best of 14.71 seconds for senior
Ori Rinaman that ranks him third on the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) leaderboard.
Senior
Johnathon Stiles surged through another 400-meter hurdle race, narrowly missing his season best and PR by .09 seconds with a time of 52.22 seconds. Among new PSAC qualifiers on the day included Stamford in the 200 meters (22.34 seconds) and sophomore
Michael Lingard in the 100 meters (11.08 seconds).
In the field, freshman
Jordan Winslow cleared the high-jump bar at a new season best height of 6 feet, 3 ½ inches. Despite an unfavorable wind in the javelin, both junior
Tommy Haas and redshirt-sophomore
Alec Stimson surpassed 185 feet on their top throws to finish 1-2.
A host of men posted new bests in the discus. Freshman
Yobani Moreno Estrada threw 155 feet, 10 inches, while freshman
Pat Maloney was two feet shy of that mark. Both performances put the men in the Top 10 of the conference leaderboard.
Junior
Cam Strohe paced the Raiders in the shot, discus and hammer. Strohe improved his season best in the shot to 50 feet, ranking fifth in the league, and moved up to second on the hammer league list with a throw of 179 feet, 8 inches. Sophomore
Jacob Gieringer landed a shot put qualifier of 48 feet, 4 inches.
