Shippensburg University's
Jackson Hersh was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon by the league office.
At Lynchburg's Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational, Hersh recorded the No. 3 all-time mark in the javelin in school history on Friday with a new personal best of 224 feet, 2 inches (68.34 meters). It was achieved on his sixth and final throw, capping a strong sequence that included five straight tosses of at least 204 feet.
The mark currently leads the PSAC and ranks sixth in Division II.
His throw is eight feet farther than the No. 20 mark in the nation last season (216 feet, 2 inches); the NCAA provisional qualifier should put him in line to be a serious contender for qualification for the NCAA Championships in May while he looks to further improve the mark in the coming weeks.
It is the first career weekly award for Hersh. SU has won both of the Men's Outdoor Field Athletes of the Week thus far, as
Gian Greggo earned last week's honor for his work in the shot put.
