SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's swimming team had pace-setters in 8-of-11 events Friday to claim victory on Senior Day against Edinboro, as the Raiders defeated the Fighting Scots by a 112-75 margin in a dual meet from Donald N. Miller Pool inside Heiges Field House.
Shippensburg claimed top times in six events and in both relays, with the team's three seniors each contributing to a gold finish in the meet-concluding 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of sophomore
Hunter Keck and seniors
Shane Kaliszewski,
Wendell Banks and
Evan Anthony touched the wall first with a time of 1:32.75.
Freshman
Matt Bochanski and junior
Jeff Beyer were double winners on the day. Bochanski had the top times in both the 200-yard individual medley (IM) (2:01.64) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.33). Beyer touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.53) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.42).
SU went 1-2-3 in the 500-yard and 1,000-yard freestyle events, and all six swimmers posted times that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard. Freshman
Dawson Mohl won the 1,000 freestyle with a huge collegiate best of 10:13.21 and was third in the 500 with a time of 5:00.72.
Sophomore
Eric Zimmerman was a busy man, finishing the day swimming 1,700 yards of freestyle in about a 90-minute span. Zimmerman finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:59.94) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:15.95) while also completing the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.79.
Keck was an individual winner as well, pacing the 50-yard freestyle with a strong time of 21.92 seconds. He also anchored the victorious 200-yard medley relay, as the quartet of junior
Nick Bloom, Bochanski, Kaliszewski and Keck completed their swim in 1:38.13 to edge the Fighting Scots by .63 seconds in the first event of the day.
Freshman
Andrew Hale had another strong day of competition. Hale nearly came back to edge Bochanski in the 200-yard IM, finishing just .07 seconds behind his teammate with a time of 2:01.71. Hale was also SU's pacesetter in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.99 seconds.
Among the other PSAC cuts on the day included freshman
Vin Salvatore completing the 1,000-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 10:29.29. Salvatore also had the second-fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:03.69. Kaliszewski was SU's pacesetter in the 100-yard butterfly with a PSAC cut of 53.66 seconds, while Bloom led the Raiders in the 100-yard backstroke with a PSAC cut of 55.02 seconds.
