RECAP: Volleyball Remains Unbeaten in PSAC, Gets 3-1 Win at ESU

Raiders extend win streak to 15 matches

The Shippensburg University volleyball team maintained its winning ways Saturday, posting a 3-1 victory at East Stroudsburg to triumph in a matchup of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) unbeatens held inside Koehler Fieldhouse.

Shippensburg (16-2, 6-0 PSAC) had its consecutive streak of sweeps end at nine as East Stroudsburg (15-3, 5-1) claimed the first set on Saturday, but the Raiders rallied to claim their 15th straight victory – further extending the school-record win streak. Set scores were 22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21.

Junior Gabriella Johnson capped off an excellent weekend with a team-high 16 kills to complement 15 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Johnson served two aces and hit .164 on the day.

Junior Samantha Webber was key in the middle, slamming 13 kills and hitting .273 to go along with three solo blocks and three block assists. Fellow middle, junior Kendall Johnson, had nine kills and hit .182.

Sophomore Emily Hangen handed out 49 assists, notched nine digs, served two aces, snuck in two kills and had two block assists. Junior Megan Forstburg led the Raiders with 20 digs.

Senior Morgan DeFloria achieved her 10th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 18 digs. DeFloria hit .204 and has now produced double-digit kills in 16-of-18 matches in 2018.

Scores were close throughout each set. In the opening frame, the score was tied 22-22 before the Warriors took the final three points. In Set 2, the score was tied 12-12 before a 6-1 SU run flipped the momentum to the Raiders.

The third set featured a 12-9 lead for the Warriors that was countered with an 11-2 run for the Raiders. SU stormed out of the gates in the final set, establishing leads of 13-5 and 18-8, and 21-11. ESU made one last gasp with a 6-0 run, but the Raiders closed out the win with four of the final eight points.

SU is the only team in the conference unbeaten through the first six league matches. Of the three teams with one loss, the Raiders have handed that loss to two of the teams (California and East Stroudsburg).
