CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Seniors
Bryan Pearson and
Tra-C Davis earned All-America honors in their respective events Friday as they represented the Shippensburg University men's outdoor track & field team in competition at the 2018 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships being held at the Irwin Belk Complex on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University.
Pearson claimed his third All-America honor in the discus with his highest place-finish to date at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, claiming fifth on a top throw of 178 feet, 9 inches. Davis, meanwhile, earned his second outdoor All-America Second Team classification in the high jump by tying for 12th place on a top clearance of 6 feet, 8 ¾ inches.
Both men competed in their respective events for the final time collegiately.
Pearson notched his second All-America First Team finish on the strength of his third throw (final attempt of prelims). The effort moved him from 10th place, a position outside of the finals, into fourth place and the opportunity for three more throws. He delivered three throws of 170 feet or greater in the finals but did not improve upon his third attempt.
Overall, Pearson will graduate has the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)'s all-time record holder in the discus with a PR of 182 feet, 10 inches (55.74 meters). His fifth-place finish Friday accompanies a 10th-place finish (All-America Second Team) last year and a sixth-place finish in 2016. Friday's throw is five feet farther than any of his attempts at his previous two NCAA Outdoor Championship meets.
Davis recorded his All-America Second Team finish after clearing the first two heights of the high jump competition (6 feet, 6 ¾ inches and 6 feet, 8 ¾ inches) on the first attempt. He was unable to get over the bar at the third height (6 feet, 10 ¼ inches).
It was the fourth consecutive year that Davis reached the NCAA Outdoor Championships and cleared at least one height, as he also finished 13th in both 2017 and 2015. Davis finishes as a three-time All-American including his indoor championships appearances. His final outdoor PR will stand at 6 feet, 11 inches (2.11m).
On Saturday morning, sophomore
Ben Hurda will represent the men's squad with competition in the javelin.
