SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team split a crossover doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon against IUP, claiming the opener 12-7 but dropping the nightcap 7-3 on a gray day from Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (21-18) and IUP (11-23) combined for 43 hits on the day – including 22 by the Raiders. Each team hit three home runs as well.

Junior
Cash Gladfelter finished 5-for-9 on the day with a double, three runs scored and a stolen base. The shortstop finished Game 1 with a 4-for-5 performance at the dish.

Dalton Hoiles and
Nick Spangler and junior
Tommy Baggett all had three-hit days at the plate.
Â
Hoiles homered in both games of the doubleheader to up his season homer total to a team and career-high 10 round trippers. The center fielder drove in five runs on the day while also scoring three times.

Baggett finished 3-for-5 with a home run, double and three RBIs. Spangler went 3-for-7 on the afternoon with two doubles and two RBIs.

Noah Inch started on the mound for the Raiders in Game 1 while sophomore

Shippensburg will return to action Friday at 1 p.m. when it hosts East Stroudsburg in a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader from Fairchild Field on Military Appreciation Day.

Game 1

IUP jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first two innings of play but SU found a response over the next two innings to re-gain the lead. Spangler doubled to right-center field in the third to score Gladfelter. Hoover recorded a RBI-groundout later in the third to trim IUP's lead to 4-2.

In the fourth, Spangler doubled for the second consecutive inning to score Gladfelter and make it 4-3. Hoiles then followed with a line-drive home run down the left-field line to give SU a 5-4 lead.

After IUP took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth, Shippensburg broke the game open with a seven-run frame in the bottom of the fifth. Knotts tied the game with a double that scored Baggett. Goertzen followed with a single through the right side to score Hoover and Knotts and give SU an 8-6 lead.

Hoiles made it 10-6 with a double down the left-field line that scored Goertzen and Gladfelter. Two batters later, Baggett doubled to left scoring Hoiles and Spangler to make it 12-6 and cap the seven-run fifth for SU.

IUP tallied a run in the sixth to make it 12-7 but freshman
Dalton Oates came out of the Raider bullpen and pitched a clean seventh inning to finish the game.

Hoiles got SU off to a quick start with a solo home run to left-center field in the bottom of the first. IUP tied the game in its ensuing at-bat on a solo home run from Ted DeSanti.

The Crimson Hawks tallied four runs in the fourth and two runs in the seventh to take a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Baggett homered to lead off the seventh and make it 7-2. Gladfelter added one more SU run with a RBI single scoring Hoover but the Raiders ultimately fell 7-3.

Sophomore
Jack Jenkens struck out a career-high five batters in his first collegiate start. Oates pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of the bullpen in the nightcap while recording two strikeouts.
